Cooperation background and aim

Poland and China possess a number of valuable cultural and historical landscapes. These important areas have developed thanks to traditional land use methods applied over the centuries, which constitutes an element of national identity of these countries.

There have been chosen two areas to the project: Malopolska region in Poland and Beijing mountainous areas in China. The Beijing area singles out mostly by its agricultural use of mountain area together with rich diversity of cultural landscapes. Besides, it is an ecologic zone with many tourist resources. This area should be protected in order to improve its natural environment and landscape, and also to improve the economic development of this area.

In contrast, the mountain area of the Malopolska Region had been used mainly for agriculture. However the last socio-economic changes in Poland have caused disappearance of arable farming, which influenced the landscape, environment and economy. Nowadays the mountain areas of Małopolska Region are used for tourism.

Today's rapid economic development of Poland and China poses a threat to their cultural and historical landscapes. The value of these landscapes is frequently underestimated at regional and local levels, where they "lose" when confronted by urgent investment projects. Meanwhile, interdisciplinary management of these landscapes can bring about a number of valuable economic and environmental results. This may turn out incredibly important now that we are dealing with the world economic downturn and climatic changes.

Many results confirming the above hypothesis have been obtained in the course of a successful international project (at the University of Agriculture in Krakow) "Protecting Historical Cultural Landscapes to strengthen Regional Identities and Local Economies" — "Cultural Landscape" (www.cadses.ar.krakow.pl) and "Cultural Landscapes of mountain and highland river valleys" (www.rabalandscape.ur.krakow.pl) conducted in Central and Eastern Europe. Moreover, there is numerous evidence as to that in countries such as England, the Netherlands, Austria, Germany or Norway, with which the University of Agriculture in Krakow constantly cooperates on cultural landscape issues.

The cooperation aims at experience exchange focusing on cultural landscapes protection and development, spatial planning and management, revitalization of areas degraded as a result of industry growth and urban processes. Thanks to study visits, the project will enable the establishment of scientific cooperation and direct knowledge exchange, which may result in joint research projects in the future.

Cooperation scope

The project will provide an opportunity to present results of the best case studies in Europe with regards to interdisciplinary cultural and historical landscape management helping in the improvement of local economy and environment. Two session have been planned.

The first one: "Interdisciplinary historical and cultural landscape management will be organized in China", October 2013, Beijing, China.

The second session "Application of teledetection and GIS tools for landscape monitoring and management" will be organized in Poland, 2014. The second session "Application of teledetection and GIS tools for landscape monitoring and management" will be organised in Poland in 2014.
